If you’ve ever travelled through a beach town, chances are you’ve seen them: the classic wooden surfboard necklaces hanging in souvenir shops, strung on a simple leather cord. They’re timeless. A symbol of surf culture that instantly brings back memories of the ocean, freedom, and adventure.
That aesthetic always stuck with us, simple, recognisable, and deeply connected to the surf lifestyle.
But while travelling on surf trips, another reality kept repeating itself.
The Problem Every Surfer Knows
Misplacing a fin key.
Losing it in the sand.
Searching in the countless pockets of your backpack.
Borrowing one from a stranger in the parking lot.
A fin key is small, essential, and somehow always disappears at the worst moment, usually when the swell is good and time matters.
That frustration sparked a question:

That’s when the decision was made to create Finkey Jewelry a surfboard necklace that doesn’t just look good, but actually serves a purpose.
The goal was clear:
- Keep the iconic surfboard shape
- Make it wearable every day
- And turn it into a fully functional fin key
Finding the Perfect Size
The first challenge was size.
Too big, and it feels bulky and uncomfortable around your neck.
Too small, and it won’t work properly as a fin key.
We went through multiple iterations, using 3D printing and mechanical engineering to test different dimensions. Each prototype was worn, handled, and used on real boards. The aim was to go as small as possible for comfort and clean aesthetics without ever compromising usability.
After extensive testing, we landed on a size that feels natural as jewelry, yet delivers the leverage and precision needed to tighten or loosen fins with confidence.
Built for the Ocean
Next came materials.
A necklace that lives the surf lifestyle needs to survive it too saltwater, sun exposure, sand, and constant wear. Our engineers carefully selected materials designed for longevity and durability in a marine environment, ensuring that every Finkey piece can handle real surf conditions without corroding, weakening, or losing its finish.
This wasn’t about creating a novelty item.
It was about building something you can rely on, trip after trip.
